Part IV: Deciding the graphics card

Graphics Card Image

In the previous article, I had mentioned that I am inclined towards Nvidia graphic cards currently. The main reason for this has been the performance improvement over the previous generation along with almost no increase in pricing. It is not cheap but compared to the pricing of the previous generations, this is relatively reasonable. Another reason being Radeon not really having anything comparable in their previous generation.

Nvidia pushed back the release dates for RTX 3070 due to stock issues it faced during the release of RTX 3080 and 3090 cards. The new release date is on October 29, 2020 which a day later than the Radeon launch event on October 28, 2020. This is great as those looking to buy the RTX 3070 can at least know what AMD has for its Radeon lineup.

So based on this I have decided to wait till the AMD Radeon launch over and then finalize on the graphics card.

I will update this article after the launch of AMD Radeon Big Navi. So stay tuned...

Update: AMD revealed it's next generation Radeon Graphics cards on 28th October, 2020.

Big Navi was a BIG SURPRISE for everyone. I don't think anyone expected so much from AMD. Nvidia RTX 3000 series had received great response from reviewers and AMD Big Navi was not expected to come close. But when AMD announced the Radeon RX 6000 series, it was such a surprise.

The performance charts shown by AMD indicates how close it comes to the RTX 3000 series and performing better in some cases. Although these are tests performed by AMD but I expect 3rd party reviews to confirm this like it did in case of the AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors.

I will just share the charts displayed by AMD:

RTX 2080 Ti against the RX 6800:

RTX 3080 against the RX 6800 XT:

RTX 3090 vs RX 6900 XT:

Looking at the charts above I am really expecting these cards to give a strong answer to Nvidia's RTX 3000 series line up.

The pricing is going to be interesting as the starting price of RX 6000 series is $579 which is comparatively higher than $499 of RTX 3000 series. The RX 6800 comes with 16 GB of GDDR6 memory as compared to just 8GB on the RTX 3070 although I feel apart from the memory the RTX 3070 will provide better performance. The 3rd party reviews will make these things clear.

So as to which graphics card I will be choosing for my gaming PC has become a bit tricky. The insufficient availability of stocks has made it extremely difficult for me to buy the Ryzen 5600X and I feel that I would have to pay around 3-4k higher than the actual price of Rs. 27,128.

I am targeting the RX 6800 and RTX 3070 as the ones I will be going for. Based on which becomes available first I will be getting that. I really wanted to get the build completed by this time but the launches of new series and the availability has made it really difficult but I don't want to delay it any further.

I have all the components for my gaming PC apart from the CPU and the graphics card which are the most important component. I have finalized the CPU which is going to be the Ryzen 5600X and should be getting it by 17th November, 2020 unless things change and stocks don't become available. The graphics card is going to be the most difficult one as the Founders Edition of Nvidia cards are nowhere to be seen. I am not even sure if they are ever going to make it available in India. If I buy the RTX 3070, it has to be the founders edition else it will be RX6800.

I hope that you are liking my blog. Please share your feedback and help me improve it. Have a great day!
